Recycle Yard.

This small garden in Coogee presented many opportunities as well as problems to overcome. A very steep incline through the garden meant that the connection to the inside was very poor. A large retaining wall was installed only metres from the rear doors causing a very claustrophobic effect when viewed from the inside. Access to the upper level was via some narrow concrete steps located on the left hand boundary. The good news was that the retaining wall was constructed from beautiful sandstone blocks. It was decided that the garden needed to be opened up from the lower area and wide shallow steps installed between the levels. The existing sandstone wall was removed and re-built across the rear of the garden to create a raised bed and to retain soil. The change in levels was utilised by introducing a timber bench seat in the lower garden. The back to the seat is formed by the new recycled brick walls that compliment the sandstone blocks. A garden area has been created between the levels to soften up the view from inside and to give a far more airy feel to the scheme. Bluestone paving was chosen as it really does work tremendously well with the various recycled products we used through the garden. Garden lighting and mixed planting complete this highly successful and challenging project.
