Form and Function - Menai
For this project in Menai we were given an open brief to create a space that was both visually stunning but also practical.
The only firm parts to the brief were to screen the hot water system and to install a new shade structure that wouldn’t take any light away from the kitchen or living areas.
The garden already had a number of retaining walls so we decided to clad those with a hardwood baton to bring them up to the 21th Century.
The hardwood was then used to create screening, a deck with in-built seating (doubling as a retaining wall) and also to clad the pergola posts and beams.
Although we used three different sizes of hardwood timber throughout the garden we were able to use Spotted Gum hardwood for each. This really helped unify the space.
A generous travertine terrace was constructed with a beautiful open pergola structure above which retracts or opens at a touch of a button.
The last large item is the oversize red trough which we custom made to provide a real impact of colour while also helping to divide up the space to provide intimate seating areas.
Extensive lighting and an unusual but colourful planting palette complete what is a very successful garden and was a real pleasure to work on.
